The idea to question
Picking a treatment online tells the doctor enough about my health.
The short answer
A menu choice does not tell the doctor enough to judge your care needs. The Federation of State Medical Boards said this in advice adopted in May 2026. It is a group of the state boards responsible for doctors’ licences. The board group’s prescribing guidance

A form can be part of the exchange
As of September 2026, the board group’s advice allows a first visit from a distance if it meets the care standards that apply to the visit. The doctor must get enough information to judge your needs. The medical-board group’s policy
The group says a form with only set questions and answer choices cannot, by itself, decide treatment. A form can help when the doctor can follow up your answers with more questions and gather enough information for care. The medical-board group’s policy
These are recommendations to state boards, rather than a national law. The binding rules come from the individual state, as of September 2026. The medical-board group’s policy
Ask when the visit would move in person
Under the board group’s advice, any test or examination needed to judge your problem is the doctor’s responsibility. The doctor must provide it, arrange it elsewhere, or refer you for it. The medical-board group’s policy
- How do we keep the exchange going if I have another question?
- What would mean I need an in-person visit?
- Where will I find the written plan after we speak?
